I'm going to be 100% honest. I had momentary doubts about introducing Woody to clicker training. He is one of the few horses I come across that was trained WELL with traditional methods (as most horses that come to me are coming to me specifically because traditional methods were done poorly and now the horse either won't or can't cope with them). He's a well adjusted horse that seems to know and like/not mind his job. Would I ruin him by introducing clicker training? Would I make him an energizer bunny, mugging monster? Those were legitimate thoughts that entered my brain. I had to remind myself, of course I wouldn't! If anything, he's a horse that will benefit from positive reinforcement being a "cherry on top" for performing the behaviors he already does quite well to increase his investment in sessions and lessons with his kid. I'm also glad that I introduced the clicker because it ended up really helping us in a sticky spot today and it will help his transition to bitless. There's certainly the chance, as there always is, that some behaviors will fall apart once they aren't being backed up by negative reinforcement and we'll take those if they come. He's the first horse I've come across where I don't have inclinations of much falling apart. We'll find out :) In these sessions, we're conditioning the clicker and learning the default behavior of standing still with head and neck straight ahead of him. We had some significant distractions in wasps, Wonka getting under our feet and sudden gusts that picked up toward the end, but he made tremendous progress, even on his right side which he was quite unsure about when we started.
