A year after moving to Vacaville, California, kendama reached my school through kids who’s families lived in the nearby cities of Sacramento and Elk Grove where kendama historically took storm. With the release of the “Tribute Kendama Team Announcement 2012” in February, and other videos like these, I quickly became fascinated with the endless possibilities of play and unique individual style that people brought to the game. My announcement video marks the nearing of 7 years of playing kendama. I believe this is significant because seven represents perfection in some cultures. Kendama teaches us that though we can always near mastery there is almost never such a thing as perfection. Kendama is great because it’s affordable, simple, complex, mobile, non-electronic, non-magnetic (lol) and accessible thanks to players and companies like KendamaUSA. Many people from different backgrounds and walks of life are able to play. It is a game and sport that continuously reminds us that we can do things we don’t think are possible. I am very happy with how this edit turned out. I chose to film in the three cities of Sacramento, Vacaville and San Francisco. Each has significance. Without the Sacramento scene erupting I would not have found kendama as soon as I did. I grew up playing kendama in Vacaville, hosting jams and being inspired by local players. Currently I work full time in SF and help host weekly jams every Friday. Thanks to everyone who has ever invested time into kendama in anyway. From those that I daily share kendama with to those who are years deep into this kendama journey and deeply invested in our global dama-family. We are all pioneering a sport. Thank you Dave Mateo for this beautifully filmed, cut and produced edit. I love you brother and am more than honored to now call my “favorite kendama player ever” my “KENDAMAUSA TEAMMATE AND MENTOR”.
