From her childhood as daughter of the late president Park Chung-hee to mourning the murder of both of her parents our Lee Ji-yoon looks back at her life. Park Geun-hye, whose father ruled Korea for 18 years and whose mother was killed by an assassin's bullet, was inaugurated on Monday as Korea's first female president. Park never married and has no children. She describes herself as being married to the nation. Her father and late president Park Chung-hee is credited with bringing about tremendous economic growth during his rule, but others accuse him of political repression and authoritarianism. After both of her parents were killed, Park dropped out of public life for awhile before stepping back into the political arena in 1998 when the Asian Financial Crisis hit Korea. Then in 2007, she made her first bid for the nation's top office, competing with Lee Myung-bak for the Grand National Party's nomination. Though she lost to Lee who went on to become president, Park continued to play a vital role within the party, serving as the party's chair, and bringing a surprising victory for the re-branded Saenuri Party in last year's April general elections. Park has the strong support of her party, especially from members who feel her father put Korea where it is today. However, there were times when she was criticized for defending her father's controversial rule, leading her view of history to become a political hot potato. Then Park finally admitted what her father did was wrong when referring to the deaths of people who fought for democracy during his authoritarian rule. Now, as the nation's chief executive, Park still has to convince Koreans she has laid to rest her father's legacy, and that she will stand true to the promises she made during and after she was elected. President Park will also have to prove she is indeed something more than just the "queen of elections" and someone who lived a life of a "princess." Lee Ji-yoon, Arirang News.
