Tsukimono is a solo project of Johan Gustavsson aka Johan G. Winther, a very fruitful musician and multi-instrumentalist from Gothenburg, Sweden. Over a span of more than twenty years his music has been released in various formats as limited editions on notable Swedish labels like Kalligrammofon, Komplott, Kning Disk, Hockey Rawk as well as international ones like Mechanized Mind, Arterija, Slaapwel, just to name a few. Apart from his Tsukimono alias, Johan plays in a lot of Swedish indie-rock, post-rock, metal, noise and hardcore bands. The list is impressive: Scraps Of Tape, Barrens, Blessings, Omni Of Halos, Gallowglas, Conduo Orchestra, Alina and probably many more. Obviously Tsukimono has this hardcore metal vibe to it too, but unlike the most bands where Johan is involved it was initially devoted to minimalist experimental electronica with occasional (usually heavily processed) instrumental additions and field recordings. Using a vast palette of sounds — be it either serene strings loops, deep resonating drone soundscapes or howling noises of a modular synth, each Tsukimono release is clearly focused on a certain theme or narrative retaining its unique consistency and completeness. A perfect example of this is his latest release as Johan G. Winther, "The Rupturing Sowle" LP, recorded in isolation in 2012 and re-released recently. https://www.discogs.com/artist/95647-... On his early mini-album "What Note, Who's Note?", where "Black On Grey" is taken from, Johan uses loops and bits of acoustic guitar, piano, strings and other instruments processed with various VST-effects and blending them with tape recordings. The end result is very reminiscent of the records by such bands like The Books or Matmos, but with less frenetic sample chopping and slower tempo, with a more loop-based, meditative and melancholic tone. And of course with its distinctive northern character. Overall "What Note, Who's Note?" has a perfect autumn and winter mood to it. https://www.discogs.com/release/83173... "What Note, Who's Note?" was originally released on HEYYOUFUCKINGMAN! in 2004 as a limited edition of 10 copies. It was re-released in 2006 as a part of "Color Series" project by now defunct Arterija record label — a set of 10 albums from 10 different countries, each one assigned a certain color in a random order. This one was in color white and representing Sweden. Each album was a limited to 50 copies CDR release in handmade color cardboard sleeve with a sticker. Unfortunately "Color Series" never came to fruition, only 5 out of 10 releases were made. Listen to the full album https://tsukimono.bandcamp.com/album/...
