Meet Wikie - The Talking Killer Whale

Meet Wikie, the world's first talking killer whale, who can say words like 'hello' and 'bye bye'. Wikie is a 14 year old female Orca or Killer Whale, and lives in captivity at Marineland in Antibes, France. Scientists say they have recorded Wikie repeating the words - hello, bye bye, counting up to three, and even saying the name of her trainer ‘Amy.’ Six judges rated whether the vocalisation matched the original word or noise, plus the whale words were also analysed in waveform, and matched the human words when the acoustical recordings were compared. Wikie did well, making recognizable copies of all the sounds within 17 tries, the researchers said, she got two of the human sounds right on her very first attempt: “hello” and “one, two, three.” Wikie made "recognisable copies" of all the six phrases they said to it, and picked them up "relatively quickly". When you think about it, the whale speaks pretty good English for living in France.
