The gardens at the 1620s House are laid out like a series of outdoor rooms. In this film, we take a look at the first of them - the Front Courtyard. The wealthy Digby family needed a garden which reflected their social status and social obligations and the Front Courtyard played an important role in that. All of the plants throughout the gardens are authentic for the period and would have featured in English gardens from the early 17th century. The plants in the Front Courtyard were all introduced to Britain both for their beauty and novelty value.
