The formation of the craterous surface of the Moon is the result of numerous hits by the meteorites. As the result of such collisions, the surface of the moon is covered by a thick layer of crushed rocks and coarse Moon dust. The most violent collisions with the meteorites took place during the Late Heavy Bombardment about 3-4 billion years ago. Such violent page in the history of the Earth's only natural satellite is known as the Lunar cataclysm. During this period the Moon and most likely the planet Earth was heavily influenced by the meteorites.
