James Kalm winds down a long day of biking and recording with a jaunt to Chelsea and a visit to the new Skarstedt Gallery. The presentation he attends is the first exhibition by German painter André Butzer with the gallery. Your reporter has been keeping tabs on Butzer for nearly twenty years now, and is pleasantly surprised to find that the artist is again predictably unpredictable. This selection of paintings are the artist’s signature “ginger bread boy”. The images repeat a couple of elements like large googly eyes, and shiftable arms and legs. The interior of the figures are whimsical abstractions that meld a number of different media, oil, acrylic, spray paint, varnish, metallics and crayon. The press release positions Butzer as the heir apparent to German Neo-Expressionists like Georg Baselitz and Albert Oehlen with a tinge of the American Abstract Expressionism of Philip Guston and Willem de Kooning. All this is put on canvas with the naïve almost childlike spontaneous alacrity of a kid on his way to MacDonald’s. Echoes of a more sinister outlook are hinted at with some of the titles of drawings “Tod der Erde” (Death of the Earth) and “Verstorbene träufeln Gesundheit auf die Erde” (Deceased drip health onto the earth).
