This time at Blackhouse Vapor Company, Alec explains the difference between nicotine salts and freebase nicotine! You've probably seen the small bottles at your local vape shop labeled "Nic Salts" and you may be wondering what it means. The difference between freebase nicotine and nic salts is in the chemical composition. Phillip Morris found that if the nicotine was de-protonated (via ammonia) or to remove its positive charge, it can go back to its free state where it will be much easier to travel across membranes in our bodies. In a nutshell, nicotine in its freebase form makes it more bioavailable to your lungs and to your brain which makes it more potent. Nic salts are nicotine in its natural state, which is less bioavailable to our bodies due to the positive charge attached to it. So why use nicotine salts? Recently, Pax Labs (creators of the Juul) found that if they combine benzoic acid with nicotine salts you can vape comfortably at high nicotine levels such as 50 mg and it also makes it easier for your body to absorb nicotine contrary to the nature of nic salts. It seems from Pax’s patent that it only works on specific salt nicotine formulation with certain types of acids. Nicotine salts help create a more cigarette-like hit due to their ability to reach higher nicotine levels with bearable throat hits. Nic salts are a great alternative to freebase nicotine in smaller devices, usually mouth-to-lung devices, such as the Aspire Breeze 2, Suorin Air and others.
