Nickel plating isn't that difficult, but getting a smooth, mirror finish takes a couple of additional steps. It can dramatically change the appearance of any metal. Using NiSO4, NiCl2 and Boric Acid, with the correct temperature and pH, nickel plating can be done in an hour; and works marvelously well. It's a traditional electrolytic cell, except the solution remains essentially the same. The changes occur on the cathode metal of your choosing.
