6 years ago today started ISIS its offensive to capture Kobanî city and the Kobanî canton in the Kurdish de facto autonomous region Rojava/West Kurdistan. Kobanî held a strategic position on the border with Turkey. From Kobanî in the West, past Sinjar and toward Erbil in the East, lay a corridor of oil pipelines and refineries. Control of Kobani would help solidify ISIS control of Syria’s oil fields, and locking down that revenue was part of the goal to create the ISIS caliphate. In the end, Kobanî’s battle was the beginning of the end of the Islamic State and became a symbol of resistance against terrorism. Kobanî also witnessed Kurdish unity, as Peshmerga forces joined YPG/YPJ fighters to defeat ISIS with the help of a US-led coalition. That was a historical moment for millions of Kurds worldwide.
