In the late 1960s, the US Air Force began operating the CH-47 Chinook. 9 Squadron pilots would witness the new helicopter in action as it plucked damaged Hueys out of the forest, moved artillery and troops, and offered various other support roles to the Australians. The Royal Australian Air Force would eventually purchase Chinooks for themselves in the early 1970s, and the helicopter would go on to become one of the most reliable and important aircraft ever built to fulfil a military role, challenging the B-52 and C-130 with its timeless design and continued utility. But long before this legacy was established, early versions of the Chinook - like early versions of the Huey and the M-16 assault rifle - had somewhat of a dangerous reputation in Vietnam, as the design flaws were still being figured out.
