A book review of The Names by Florence Knapp A historical fiction novel published in 2025. We meet a mother the day before she registers the name of her son. She is expected to name him Gordon. The name that all boys in her husband's family have been called for generations. She likes the name Julian, which means 'sky father' and still honours her husband. Her daughter likes the name Bear. We follow the family in 3 alternative realities. In one, she names him Bear. In the other, Julian. And in the third, Gordon. A book that explores motherhood, domestic violence, and identity. This book made me sob.
