Trial begins for man accused in Pensacola adult birthday party triple-murder

PENSACOLA, Fla. -- The triple-murder trial of a man accused of fatally shooting three people in Escambia County in April 2024 is now underway. The state says on the night of a 24th birthday party, three invitees were sitting in a parked car near West Jackson Square. Three other people approached the vehicle and fired 30 to 40 rounds. Prosecutors says one of the shooters was 24-year-old Torrance Sumler. "Two of the men, Mr. Powers and Mr. Carstarphen, were killed from gunshot wounds to the back," prosecutor Charlie Britt said. "They never saw it coming. Markeese Turner was shot in the front, the back, and the side." The victims are: -Markeese Turner, 26 -Michael Carstarphen, 28 -Trashawn Powers, 23 Prosecutors told jurors on Tuesday they will hear from witnesses from the party, investigators, and a deputy with a K9 that helped track a car leading to Sumler. "They identified who this vehicle belonged to, and they talked to that person," Britt said. "They interview that person, and that person says, 'Yep, that night Torrance Sumler had my car, and he was the driver of my car.'" The defense says evidence does show three men were killed in their car by three people -- but out of 15 to 30 attendees, no one identified Sumler. "Y'all will hear quite a bit of testimony about a chaotic scene there," defense attorney Jeremy Early said. "People laid out performing CPR, some people say they saw a car drive off, and some people say they saw men run away from the scene. But none of them are going to say they saw Torrance Sumler." "She does tell the officers that she believes that they're twisting this around," Early added, "that she believes that they're manipulating her memory, that she believes that she had her car, and that she was with someone named Al." The trial is expected to last three days. Delarrian Black Jr., 30, is also charged with three counts of murder in the case. His next court date is set for Feb. 25.
