Impact of Farm Bill 2018 Webinar

The 2018 Farm Bill failed to pass the House when it was voted on last month, and both houses of Congress are working to put forth a piece of legislation for reauthorization. Please write your representative and senator, who is drafting their version, and ask them to protect access and funding programs that directly impact the people we serve through our Catholic Charities network as well as farmers and international hunger programs. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), the National Catholic Rural Life Conference (NCRLC), Catholic Charities USA (CCUSA), and Catholic Relief Services (CRS) have worked closely to support policies in the Farm Bill that: strengthen and expand domestic anti-hunger programs; support rural communities and family farms; ensure safe living and working conditions for farmworkers; promote conservation and good stewardship of the land; promote fairness for farmers in developing countries; and provide food security aid efficiently and effectively to hungry people worldwide. In Northeast Ohio, the Catholic Hunger & Shelter Network (CHSN) provided 3,734,183 meals through its partners just in 2017. Those meals were provided through pantry bags, congregate meals, and meals provided at shelters. Across the eight counties of the Diocese of Cleveland, Catholics work with three different food banks. The relationship the CHSN programs have with the foodbanks is imperative in serving the number of families and individuals that are served. The programs spend pennies on the dollar to purchase food from the foodbanks who rely heavily on USDA, TEFAP, and CSFP as compared to if it was purchased from wholesale vendors. Without these supplemental food programs and the savings the foodbanks pass onto our programs, they would feed tens of thousands instead of millions of meals to the vulnerable and needy in Northeast Ohio each year, which is why we urge you to contact your legislator now to continue supporting these programs. http://cqrcengage.com/ccdocle/farmbil...
