BADLANDS 2022 Granada, Spain AN UNSUPPORTED ULTRACYCLING GRAVEL RACE ON THE EDGE OF EUROPE The wildest bikepacking off-road challenge in Europe: 780km +15.000m across the only official deserts in Europe, the wild coast of Cabo de Gata and the highest Col in the continent, Pico Veleta at 3.396m. https://badlands.cc/ What did I get myself into? Never ridden more than 365km in a day and now we set off for a crazy 780km unsupported gravel race. They give you the route, a gps tracker (so they can check you follow the route) and off you go. Stop where you want, sleep where you want. First to make it back wins. Sounds easy... Last year my best friend Gert did this crazy thing solo and his story inspired me. Not that I wanted to do this solo (I´m not that crazy haha) but I wanted to experience it. Being out there, grinding the kilometers and see what the body and mind can do. Pushing myself to limits I never looked for. Not going ´deep´ but going ´long´. So I got Gert excited again to do this as a pair (you can enter solo or as a pair) and we were lucky to get an entry (the event was sold out in minutes). We talked long, prepared ourselves physically, mentally and tactically as well as we could. Got all our ´shit´ together and off we went to Granada. Gert´s experience and methodology turned out to be the key to our succes. Without his guidance and expertise I would probably still be out there in the dessert. The next couple of video´s give a good sense of the terrain we went trough. From forests, to desserts, to steep climbs and sandy beaches. The route was extremally varied, extreme and challenging. What it doesn´t show is joy, suffering, hardship, friendship, tiredness, pain and the euphoric feeling when we crossed the finish line. The classification was never a goal but finishing in 4th place was the cherry on the cake. It was the hardest thing I ever did and I wouldn´t and couldn´t have done it without Gert. Thank you for an amazing experience and letting me suffer haha Gert already put down some words (race reports) about the days we where one the bike... Day 1, part 1v2 Start: 08:00, Sunday September 4th Lunch time: 15:05 Km 0 - Km 128 Race Report Badlands 2022 (by Gert) Day 1 Marco and I were riding in the pairs category. Riding as a pair was also new for me but I couldn’t wish a better team mate than my best friend @coheemskerk! With my experience of last year we were better prepared. The first section was still a lot of climbing but less long and steep than last year so we started the race a bit more aggressive, with the goal to make the it to the 266K mark (Gor) at the end of day 1. A broad variety of landcapes unfolded during the day. Very special to do the biggest part of the Gorafe Desert loop in daylight! We succeeded in our goal although we had to give it all. Specially the last 60K in pitch dark we had t keep on pushing on a “roling track” meaning that is was constantly going up and down 😉 Arriving in Gor around 2.00 a.m. We encountered some some so called “Trail Magic”: the local bar was still open so we could order some toast and refreshing softdrinks!
