Do you need a counselor or a life coach? This video explains the main difference between therapy and coaching. As both a life coach and therapist I am often asked "what is the difference between these two things you do?" Actually there is an important difference between the two professions that you should know when seeking professional help. I draw the line around my intention as a helping professional in that relationship; what am I here to help you accomplish? As a life coach, my main job is to help you improve on specific goals you've come to coaching for; better grades, better relationships, choosing the right college or career path, becoming the best at a passion like sports or artistic endeavors.... In other words, though you come to coaching with a specific challenge you want to address, there are no mental health conditions contributing to that challenge. Our focus is on making sure you have the insight, skills and accountability that coaching provides to help you be successful. While counseling may also involve setting and achieving goals, there are complicating factors that make that more difficult. Both traumatic events and serious mental health conditions like substance abuse, depression, anxiety, self-harm, eating disorders, PTSD...are struggles that impact all areas of life and wellbeing. It is very difficult for any of us to function, let alone achieve personal goals, when these issues go unaddressed. Therapists undergo specific education to help you overcome such situations. These situations are beyond the scope of practice for coaches and coaching is therefore a separate service. *************************************** I'm Ashley Waknine, a registered mental health counselor intern and life coach making weekly videos about mental health and self-management.
