Creating particles that have randomized relationships to each other produces these results. For example, a purple particle may be attracted to a green particle, but repelled if it gets to close. And the green particle may be attracted to the purple too, but also attracted to the pink particles even stronger. etc. Each particle type has its own friction and mass, but otherwise the rules are only very simple. The part that I think is amazing is that such simple particles form into symmetrical and complex structures with locomotion, etc. In that way, it's similar to life on earth. The engine in itself is very flexible, given the right rules it can roughly simulate orbiting planetary bodies (in two dimensions) and even atomic interactions.
