"Lang(Lang)gauge" is an interactive multi-media installation created by Hong Kong Exile. It is part of the Art in Containers program at the 2014 Your Kontinent Film & Media Arts Festival (www.ykfestival.ca) in Richmond, BC, Canada and is shown at the Richmond Cultural Centre (7700 Minoru Gate) daily between 1pm to 10pm from July 17-26. Hong Kong Exile is an interdisciplinary arts company in Vancouver consisting of three emerging contemporary artists. They create theatrical and experimental work inspired by cultural politics, produce innovative work and question Eastern and Western traditions. "Lang(Lang)gauge" investigates the role of the modern piano in contemporary Chinese society. While the instrument represents the western past, its skyrocketing popularity in mainland China has made the piano a symbol of the “eastern future”. Unprecedented numbers of child piano proteges have emerged as a result. What are the consequences of Chinese piano ownership and worship on such a mass scale?
