Scott Joplin-1868-1917 Scott Joplin, the crowned “King of Ragtime” had ambitions outside of writing ragtime solo piano pieces These were to write operas and ballet as well. In 1899 Joplin was busy preparing a ragtime ballet titled “the Ragtime Dance” made up of about 10 different dances, one taking the title of the ballet itself. The ballet was never performed more than once, but the” Ragtime Dance” survived and was published as a solo piece in 1906 as The Ragtime Dance: a Step-time Two Step. He instructs the pianist to please “Stamp the heel of one foot heavily upon the floor at the word stamp” Here, I use the kick bass to produce that effect, but using them during rests to emphasize the stop-time effect rather than every “stamp” marking.
