What is the difference between forcing stretches and prolonged stretching for spasticity after stroke? Prolonged stretching is a technique I usually recommend to help manage spasticity and prevent contractures after stroke. It’s comprised of a slow, gentle stretch of the affected muscle(s) holding for about 30 seconds to 1 minute at the end of your range of movement. This works WITH your spasticity because you give your spastic muscles the time to relax. Forcing a stretch works AGAINST your spasticity because you are aggressively (and most likely quickly) trying to get your muscle to relax and do what you want it to do. This will make spasticity worse.
