Hello and welcome to this report about the oil rig supplier Kreuzturm. It is a 1,250 scale model and is published by Jade Verlag in Wilhelmshaven. The kit consists of 3 sheets and building instructions. The ship was built in 1977 at the Sürken shipyard in Papenburg and had several sister ships. She was 78.87 m long, corresponding to 31.7 cm long as a model. She ran 16 kn and the crew consisted of 12 people. In addition, 16 more people could be accommodated if personnel changes on the oil platforms became necessary. The open loading trough behind the bridge is typical for these ships. Here all supplies, no matter how bulky they were, could be stored and loaded and unloaded using cranes. A very special winch system ensured that the ship could anchor up to a water depth of 250 m. Of course, I couldn't just leave this open loading tray empty and unloaded. So I constructed blue steel pipes, a few cable rolls and added a few containers and wooden boxes. I liked it better that way. During construction, I always looked for information and pictures on the Internet to get any further suggestions. I noticed that the appearance of the Kreuzturm and its sister ships has constantly changed over the years. I took a closer look at my kit and decided to build a second model. I had scanned all the sheets into the computer and started coloring the sheets using a drawing program. The hull was colored red, the superstructure in ochre, a dark yellow. I then printed it out on 120g paper. 160 g would be better, but my printer doesn't allow that. So during construction I had to reinforce all the larger parts with waste paper. I had also seen that many oil rig suppliers had a helicopter landing platform installed in front of the bridge. Of course, the new ship also needed a platform, which I recreated using photos. After two weeks of fiddly work, the second model was finished. Here, too, I filled the loading tray with loads such as cable reels and steel pipes until I was reasonably satisfied. In general, I can say that I had more fun building the second model than the first. With the second model, I call it Huntetor, I could be creative and always come up with something new, sometimes with an uncertain outcome. During the course of her sea life, the Kreuzturm sailed on all the world's oceans. She achieved particular merit in the recovery of an Air India Boeing 747 that was stranded off the coast of Ireland after a bomb explosion in June 1985. Only the Kreuzturm was considered capable of dealing with the difficult sea conditions in the Atlantic off the Irish coast. After a long and eventful working life, she was finally sold to Lisbon in October 2013 and scrapped there. This is how this little film comes to an end. I thank you for taking your time and say goodbye until the next film.
