A very rare 1923 recording of the great pianist Alfred Cortot (1877–1962) performing the last two pieces from Claude Debussy’s Children’s Corner, L. 113: V. The Little Shepherd VI. Golliwog’s Cakewalk Composed between 1906–1908 and dedicated to Debussy’s beloved daughter Chouchou, Children’s Corner is often associated with childhood; yet it is far from simple. Each miniature is shaped by Debussy’s mature harmonic subtlety, poetic imagination, and refined color palette. 00:00 🎵 V. The Little Shepherd A quiet pastoral miniature, built of wandering, flute-like lines that suggest a shepherd playing his pipe. Its contemplative atmosphere is tinged with nostalgia and translucent stillness — a dream of childhood rather than childhood itself. 02:08🎵 VI. Golliwog’s Cakewalk The suite ends with a lively, playful dance inspired by American ragtime, filled with rhythmic bounce, humor, and syncopation. It famously includes a light-hearted parody of Wagner’s Tristan, creating a whimsical yet affectionate contrast. Cortot’s 1923 interpretation is one of the earliest captured on record. Though sonically fragile, it offers a unique view of early French pianism — rich in nuance, rubato, elasticity, and color. It preserves the refined fantasy of an era that is now long gone. 🎶 Where forgotten masters play again.
