Game #15 on our list of 51 Worldwide Classics is one of the the hardest games in the collection to master, Renegade. Also more commonly known as Othello or Reversi, this game was invented by two bickering Englishmen in 1883. This game uses 64 pieces with both a white side and a black side. One player plays black side up, the other plays white side up. Starting with the player playing black-side-up, players take turns placing their pieces on the board in a way that each piece must be on a straight occupied horizontal, vertical, or diagonal line between that piece and another piece of your color. After placing a piece, all pieces of the opposite color on any line between the piece you placed and another piece of your color will be flipped to your color. If a player cannot make a valid move, they must pass their turn. Players take turns in this fashion until either the entire board is filled or neither player can play, at which point the player with the most pieces of their color on the board wins. This is kind of a weird game because what may seem like the most optimal move to a beginner (a move that flips the most pieces at once) is actually more often than not the last thing you want to do, and the CPU will capitalize on that and trap you into an endless pass cycle turning the tides against you in a heartbeat. And honestly, I felt like this game was easier playing second rather than first. There are four difficulty levels of CPU opponents to face: Normal, Hard, Amazing, and Impossible, which all must be faced in order. Beat the Impossible CPU to master the game. Also, the game keeps track of your high score, you can decide which player goes first, and each time you play it, you can unlock a piece of trivia about the game. There are five pieces of trivia about Renegade: 1. The name "Renegade" comes from the idea of the pieces constantly switching sides. (Personal Addendum: likewise, the alternate name "Reversi" comes from the idea of the tides constantly reversing over the course of the game, and the other alternate name "Othello" is a Shakespeare reference to the conflict between the title character and Iago) 2. Renegade was most likely invented in England, though which Englishman did the inventing is a matter of some dispute. 3. In some older versions, the pieces were colored red and black. 4. Some variations of the game allow for three or more players. (Personal addendum: How would that work with three-sided pieces? Like triangular three-sided D&D dice with different colors?) 5. There actually are no set rules on the color of the board, the size of the pieces, or the number of spaces. Personal story: I remember playing Othello on NES as a kid, and most of my play time was spent waiting for the computer to think.
