ONE SONG A WEEK songwriting project # 22: Ramblin Days https://www.vanwyck.nl / vanwyckmusic / vanwyck_music recorded by David Kops A lot of my favorite songs have the word ramblin' in it. I have two theories about why. One is that I'm very restless by nature (some people call it the nomadic gene) Two is that I grew up in many different places, where there was always an abundance of nature, and I was given the freedom to roam as I pleased. Some of my happiest childhood memories are about wondering in forests on my own, along seashores and rivers, making up stories in my head. Looking back on the 22 songs I brought out in the 44 weeks I did this 'one song a week' project (note to self: better call it 'one song every two weeks') a lot of them move along that theme. The same goes for this last song. It had been in my head for quite some time, but it was so 'country', I didn't really know what to do with it, or if it was meant to be my song, but then a very dear friend of mine got married after quite some ramblin', and I finished it for her, to sing it at her wedding. (I don't sing at weddings often - I guess I'm more the funeral type, but if the bride and groom have taken enough detours to find each other, sometimes it works.) So here's my rambling song, or to put it more precisely, a song to end my rambling songs. Cause sometimes you need to stop looking elsewhere and look harder at where you are. Ramblin’ days I’ve been a drifter most of my days the grass was always greener from afar My heart was always restless, my feet where nowhere bound Always on the run from common ground But here, I’m gonna stay Gonna watch each sun set on each day I’ll lean back and rest my weary head Say farewell to my ramblin’ days Say farewell to my ramblin’ days I was a coward for so long the truth was such an easy thing to hide keeping my dreams covered, keeping my head low but then you came and taught me to stand tall And with you I’m gonna stay Gonna watch each sun set on each day I’ll lean back and rest my weary head Say farewell to my ramblin’ days Say farewell to my ramblin’ days Oh lover tie me down don’t let me walk away no more Bind my feet to this ground I don’t want to stray no more Don’t let me leave, just keep me near it’s taken so long, but it’s here I belong I’ve been a drifter most of my days but here, I’m gonna stay
