Remaking Sculpture: Artist Barry X Ball

Barry X Ball has been working on his two predominant series, Portraits and Masterpieces, for the past two decades, honing his process that begins with technology-assisted scanning and milling and ends with thousands of hours of hand-carving details and enhancements in delicate, rare stones. His Portraits are busts of himself and colleagues that explore various emotions and forms, often juxtaposing them in pairs to examine the duality between calmness and agony, black and white, large and small, and singular and multi-layered. His Masterpieces recreate classical sculptures in rare, precious stone to add material considerations to historical works. Themes prevalent in Portraits often carry into the recreations, adding emotions like agony to the skin of St. Bartholomew or mourning to the Virgin Mary's face in Pietá Rondanini (after Michelangelo). During his lecture at the Nasher Sculpture Center, Ball carries us through his art history inspirations and his process in creating his stone works.
