CROATIA: FEARS MOUNTING OF RENEWED CONFLICT IN THE BALKANS

(3 Mar 1995) Natural Sound As Croatian president Franjo Tudjman's deadline approaches for the withdrawal of U-N peacekeepers, fears have been mounting of a renewed conflict in the Balkans. Serb troops in the self-proclaimed "Republic of Krajina" in Croatia have been digging fortifications in preparation for a Croatian offensive. Failing a last-minute change of heart from President Tudjman, peacekeepers will have to begin leaving Croatia when their mandate expires at the end of this month. U-N troops have managed to hold together a shaky truce between Serbian and Croat forces since the end of a six-month war in 1991. But Tudjman is angry that the blue berets have failed to disarm the Serbian fighters controlling a large swathe of Croatian territory. Serbian soldiers fear that once the peacekeepers are out of the way Tudjman will send his army against their enclave. Such a move is viewed as high risk. The Serbs have taken advantage of the truce to arm themselves and there are fears it could spark a full-scale Balkan war.
