LeBron James has showcased some serious vert throughout his career, with his running jump height reportedly maxing out around 44 inches which puts him in the upper echelon of NBA jumpers. A critical piece of that jumping ability stems from his technique. Specifically, Bron uses a single leg power jump technique to create explosive vertical force. In this video. I’ll explain that technique via the lens of biomechanics & jump science. Single leg power jump Do sweat the technique The single leg power jump emphasizes using lower body strength & coordination to convert horizontal force into vertical force. Call-outs Longer final stride: Increases load on the plant leg, drives foot into ground Pre-activation: Muscles and tendons preactivate to increase stiffness Strong foot plant: Increases vertical force Torso position: Maintains upright position Amortization phase: Transition phase between ground and air. Stretch-shorten cycle (SSC): Key jumping muscles (quads, posterior chain, calf complex) stretch out like a spring and then recoil to generate vertical force Swing leg: Sweeping arch, nearly drags the toe Arm swing: Coordinates with opposite leg to increase vertical force Executes in difference scenarios What further sets LeBron’s technique apart is that he’s able to execute it in multiple situations: And he’ll use it on the defensive end as well.
