How to sing long, clear notes

I had a question from one of the Living Voice community members asking for advice about holding notes CLEAR and LONG, so I made this video to answer the question for them and share with all of you too. The title is a little misleading as this video is too short to actually teach you HOW to do these things, but I wanted to give an overview of what we might want to consider to help with this vocal goal. I address the factors that may go into these 2 elements of holding a note, and added one more for good measure: Length, Clarity, and Stability. LENGTH: Taking in more air - and checking that there’s not something we’re doing with our body which is limiting our ability to take in enough air. Being efficient with that air - particularly in terms of ensuring good closure of the true vocal folds, so we are not “leaking” air. I would also suggest watching for your “breath effort” in terms of if you have any sense of “pushing” out the air/sound, this is likely to waste air and make you run out faster than necessary, too. There are also potentially a couple of tricks which can help to slow the rise of the diaphragm and therefore lengthen the exhale. In the Estill model they teach Torso Anchoring which may help with this. And again, an experienced body-centric teacher such as someone working with Alexander Technique may be able to offer further guidance on the optimum way to organise the body to facilitate the most efficient in breath as well as use of the air on the exhale. CLARITY: Again, full closure of the true vocal folds leads to a “clean/clear” sound as opposed to a breathy sound. A number of techniques may assist with this, for example increasing thyroid cartilage tilt especially in the upper register, and using glottal onsets especially in the lower register. I also find twang often helpful for this especially in the upper. I also mentioned the other option of clear vs distorted, but didn’t elaborate on this; my usual first go-to suggestion for reducing distortion in the sound (assuming airflow and TVF closure is good) would be False Vocal Fold retraction. This might also be something that can assist with breathiness, as FVF constriction can disrupt the vibration of the TVFs. STABILITY: Stability & consistency of airflow: Again, checking in with the body to see if something is getting in the way of this. Long notes training - to help your muscles (both breath muscles and vocal muscles) get used to this task (which is kind of an odd thing for them to do) and develop the strength for stability. Think of it like pilates for the voice. Many of the techniques I’m talking about in this video have exercises within the online Living Voice Library to teach and guide you through. At the end of the day, this is all general advice, and if you’d like to get some feedback on what you may specifically be doing or not doing that would help with facilitating your long notes, feel free to contact me to book in a session. www.bectilley.com
