Join me, Elliot and Steve on a trip from Hongqiao, Shanghai to Shaoxing on China high speed train D3131 during the Qing Ming festival for a 9 kilometer hike on the Shangqing trail, then the G7520 on the return. D3131 is a high speed train running from Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station to Longyan Railway Station, and G7520 is a high speed train running from Ningbo Railway Station to Nanjing Railway Station. Shangqing Gudao, the Shangqing Ancient Trail is just one part of a network of trails snaking through the mountains to the south east of Shaoxing, with several entrances and plenty of paths that take anything from one to six or more hours to complete. We hiked 9 kilometers on the path followed by tea merchants ferrying their wares up from Pingshui and beyond. Shaoxing; Chinese: 绍兴) is a prefecture-level city on the southern shore of Hangzhou Bay in north-eastern Zhejiang province, China. It was formerly known as Kuaiji and Shanyin and abbreviated in Chinese as 越 (Yuè) from the area's former inhabitants. Located on the south bank of the Qiantang River estuary, it borders Ningbo to the east, Taizhou to the southeast, Jinhua to the southwest, and Hangzhou to the west. As of the 2020 census, its population was 5,270,977. Notable residents of Shaoxing include Wang Xizhi, the parents of Zhou Enlai, Lu Xun, and Cai Yuanpei. It is also noted for Shaoxing wine, meigan cai, and stinky tofu, and was featured on A Bite of China. Economically, the city is driven by manufacturing of textiles, electronics, and energy-efficient lighting. The Qingming festival or Ching Ming Festival, also known as Tomb-Sweeping Day in English (sometimes also called Chinese Memorial Day, Ancestors' Day, the Clear Brightness Festival, or the Pure Brightness Festival), is a traditional Chinese festival observed by ethnic Chinese in mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore, Cambodia, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. A celebration of spring, it falls on the first day of the fifth solar term (also called Qingming) of the traditional Chinese lunisolar calendar. This makes it the 15th day after the Spring Equinox, either 4, 5 or 6 April in a given year. During Qingming, Chinese families visit the tombs of their ancestors to clean the gravesites and make ritual offerings to their ancestors. Offerings would typically include traditional food dishes and the burning of joss sticks and joss paper. The holiday recognizes the traditional reverence of one's ancestors in Chinese culture. #china #shanghai #subway #metro #train #tourism #hike #walk
