www.cool-cars-video.com This is Chris's 1971 Plymouth Barracuda. Originally a 318 Gran Coupe restoration turned into the show condition 440 'Cuda you see here. The guts of the Plymouth are a 440 Hemi engine rated at 425 horsepower, automatic 727 TorqueFlight Transmission with pistol grip shift, standard eight and three quarter rear-end. Basically, a straight forward bare bones machine with the looks that kill. Chris has had the Barracuda for twelve years, "I particularly like older cars, because cars like these bring me back to my youth, that for me is what's so special about owning old school muscle cars like this one". The Barracuda and the high performance shortened 'Cuda badge denoted different option packages and should not be confused with one another. The 1970 Plymouth 426cu.in. four speed 833 manual Hemi 'Cuda is regarded by many as the quintessential formula for the muscle car. The Barracuda beginning in 1964 and beating the Ford Mustang to the showroom floor was built on an A-body platform till 1969. Although it was a cool looking car it wasn't a performer like the mechanically resurrected and wider, lower body style of the '70s E-body 'Cuda. Plymouths' Barracuda project was expensive and poor sales of big block street machines for the second year in a row didn't help matters. A loaded Hemi 'Cuda would cost five thousand dollars. Not to mention insurance companies were appalled at the out of control horsepower that was marketed directly at young people, so they hit buyers where it hurt and put hefty surcharges on muscle car polices. Decisions were made by Chrysler and Plymouth to cut the street version AAR 'Cuda 340 cu.in. Six Pack option. Also dropped was the 440 4-barrel carbureted V8. This year would be the last for a Barracuda convertible option too. Ultimately the Hemispherical engine would be shelved. In the end, the most radical and feared original factory equipped E-bodies were only sold for two years, 1970 and 1971. Read the whole article @ www.cool-cars-video.com
