Pathological Spectrum of Lung Lesions: A Study Done on Surgical Lobectomy Specimens Layman Abstract: Lung cancer is the deadliest type of cancer for both men and women, causing more deaths than prostate or colon cancer. Apart from cancerous growths (neoplastic lesions), non-cancerous lung diseases like infections, occupational lung diseases, and breathing disorders also lead to serious health problems. This study aimed to analyze both cancerous and non-cancerous lung diseases and to understand how age, gender, lifestyle, and occupation affect lung cancer risk. The research was conducted over two years at a pathology department in Guntur, India, where 52 lung tissue samples from surgery were studied under a microscope. Special lab tests, including staining techniques and immunohistochemistry, were used to confirm difficult diagnoses. The findings revealed that 38.4% of the cases were lung tumors, with most occurring in men aged 50-60 years. The ratio of affected men to women was 4:1, and lung cancer was more common in the right lung. Smoking was the biggest risk factor for lung cancer. Among the different types of lung cancer, adenocarcinoma was the most common, followed by squamous cell carcinoma. A rare case of two lung tumors in the same patient and another case of a lung infection in an 11-year-old girl were also reported. In conclusion, lung cancer is strongly linked to smoking, and chest X-rays and CT scans help in early detection. Adenocarcinoma is now the most common lung cancer type, and tuberculosis remains the most frequent lung infection in both men and women.
