Here’s the Easy Fix That Might Save You Thousands! If your truck’s automatic running boards are misbehaving—sticking, hesitating, or just plain not working—you might be dreading an expensive trip to the dealership. But good news: the fix is likely much easier (and cheaper) than you think! I’m DirtFarmerJay, and in this episode, I’ll walk you through a simple, practical fix that can bring those moody running boards back to life—without emptying your wallet. What’s the Deal with Power Running Boards? We love our automatic running boards. They drop down when you open the door and retract out of sight once the truck is on the move. Not only does this improve the truck’s looks and aerodynamics, but it also reduces the footprint of the vehicle—especially helpful when parking in tight spaces, like a two-car garage. But like anything mechanical that lives under a truck and gets blasted with road gunk, power running boards need a little TLC from time to time. Common Symptoms of a Dirty or Sticking Mechanism Here’s what we experienced: the running boards would drop down when we opened the doors—but when we closed the doors, they’d try to retract, then stop halfway or come back down. It was frustrating. However, when the truck moved above 5 MPH, they’d suddenly work just fine and retract fully. What gives? Think Like the Engineers Turns out, these steps are smarter than they look. When the truck is stationary and the steps encounter resistance while retracting, they assume something is in the way—like a leg, a bag, or debris. As a safety feature, they reverse direction and come back down. But once the truck’s rolling, the system “assumes” there’s no one near the boards (hopefully no one’s jogging alongside your moving truck!), so it completes the retraction no matter what. This clever safety programming can cause issues if the mechanism has built-up grime or corrosion, creating just enough resistance to fool the system. The Easy (and Cheap) Fix Before assuming you need a pricey motor replacement, try this simple two-step maintenance routine: Spray It Out – When the running boards are extended, use a hose or compressed air to flush out mud, grit, and grime from the brackets and pivot points. Lube It Up – Use a high-quality, clingy lubricant like one from the Blaster® line to coat the moving parts. You want something that’ll stay in place and resist being washed away. This quick maintenance can solve most issues—and it costs way less than the $4,000 quote we got from the dealer to replace both units. Yikes. When Maintenance Isn’t Enough If you’ve cleaned and lubed the system and your running boards still don’t operate correctly, then yes—it might be time to consider replacing the motors or other components. But don’t worry—it’s not rocket science. In fact, even a beginner DIYer can do it with a few tools and a little time. Save Money. Stay Handy. Just Do It Yourself! The takeaway? You don’t need to be a professional mechanic—or have a professional mechanic’s budget—to keep your power running boards working like new. A little maintenance goes a long way, and in most cases, it’s all that’s needed. So grab your spray lube, roll under your truck, and give those hardworking steps the love they deserve. You’ll save money, avoid a trip to the shop, and gain a little more confidence in your own DIY skills.
