What’s the Deal with Power Running Boards? We love our automatic running boards. They drop down when you open the door and retract out of sight once the truck is on the move. Not only does this improve the truck’s looks and aerodynamics, but it also reduces the footprint of the vehicle—especially helpful when parking in tight spaces, like a two-car garage. But like anything mechanical that lives under a truck and gets blasted with road gunk, power running boards need a little TLC from time to time. Common Symptoms of a Dirty or Sticking Mechanism Here’s what we experienced: the running boards would drop down when we opened the doors—but when we closed the doors, they’d try to retract, then stop halfway or come back down. It was frustrating. However, when the truck moved above 5 MPH, they’d suddenly work just fine and retract fully. What gives? Think Like the Engineers Turns out, these steps are smarter than they look.
