Alfred the Great is famed as the saviour of the Anglo-Saxons and Wessex, having fought doggedly against the Danish invasions, achieving his triumph at Edington in 878 and laying the foundations of England. However, Alfred's reign was unlikely from his birth, given he was the fifth son of Æthelwulf. Alfred was also just one man, though a remarkable one at that and built on the legacies of these previous kings.
