Professor Christopher Rollston discusses the inscriptional and literary evidence for the education of a scribe in ancient Israel and Judah. He challenges the view that the Hebrew alphabet was easier to learn than other types of script — and demonstrates why he believes First Temple period scribes received a formal, standardised education. Christopher Rollston is Professor of Northwest Semitic Languages and Literatures, and Chair of the Department of Classical and Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations at the George Washington University.
