[summary] in the past I had a big entrepreneurial failure in my technology startup. [background] Today we have thousands of new business opportunities for technology developers. Almost every industry, (ie agriculture, health, sports, etc), can gain value from application of mechatronics. Meanwhile, there’s a growing collection of open source designs available for tech entrepreneurs to use freely. But open source designs are still fairly new in large scale industries so we can fail big if we cannot communicate clearly about open source tech. [story] my business failed when I attempted to offer a service to an indoor agriculture startup. Those founders needed sensors but our relationship broke down early when I discussed open source designs. After further years working with business folks, it’s clear that open source designs are misunderstood. Your customer may worry that open source technology is a risk to their business’ trade secrets. If they don’t fully understand the tech they certainly won’t understand your promises to protect their trade secrets. In that situation, I was given no information about the reasons for halting action and canceling business plans. partners who are open about their concerns are great, but in the biz world many folks are not open about things. [lesson] it’s important to talk about this pitfall that i’m calling “FOOST,” fear of open source technology. It’s a niche type of development in hardware, despite its ubiquitous status in software. Be ready to accept when people turn away from open source options, and also use discretion on whether you even mention it. Just hang tight while my community gives the world a firmware update that enables open source hardware. ☺️
