Agraharam 54 in the 100 Agraharams Project Kavassery - Easwara Pattar Gramam Among the agraharams I have documented so far, only a handful of office bearers or residents have truly stood out for the quality of information they have shared. One shining example is Sri K.S. Parameswara Sastrigal of Easwara Pattar Gramam, Kavassery. Sri Sastrigal confirms that the village is 625 years old, dating its origins to approximately 1400 AD. This period coincides with the tumultuous era of persecution and raids by the Delhi Sultanate in the south, including the Pandya country. I was particularly impressed by the wealth of data presented during our discussion, about the existence across six villages of six ponds, and 18 wells owned by the Brahmana Samooham. Equally heartening was the emphasis on the connection between the learning of Sanskrit and the cultivation of samskaras—the rituals and impressions that shape tendencies and karmic impulses. Notably, this village is one of the few agraharams that has preserved and articulated the origin story of the presiding deity in the agraharam. Sri Parameswara Sastrigal mentioned the prathishta (installation) of the idol of Sree Navaneetha Nada Gopalakrishna Swamy by a saint, making it a yathi prathishta—a consecration by an ascetic, which is believed to endow the deity with heightened spiritual energy. This is supported by the series of miracles he recounted. I was particularly pleased to hear about a devaprasnam (astrological inquiry) conducted in 1922, which marked the beginning of the village’s expression of gratitude to the saint responsible for the prathishta. This level of attention to their legacy and heritage reflects the seriousness with which the agraharam preserves its traditions. My respects and namaskarams to the community of Easwara Pattar Gramam. Kavassery consists of six Brahmin villages located about 3 miles from Alathur, on the route to Padur/Pazhayannur.
