In the past, the Royal College of Anaesthetists (RCoA) has provided several successful level 3 Safeguarding training days specifically for anaesthetists. We were told that one of the most useful parts of the day was preparing colleagues for an interview with a parent and child about a safeguarding issue that had developed in theatre. This short film has been prepared to assist anaesthetists in dealing with this potentially difficult task. We hope the film will be useful to all grades of anaesthetists who need to maintain competences at level 2. It may also help those who are at level 3 as an educational resource to pass on as a link or use during departmental governance meetings. The RCoA is grateful to the Association of Paediatric Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland for providing support and part funding this project, and to colleagues from paediatric medicine who contributed their time, energy and advice. Having a conversation with a parent and child or young person about the possibility of maltreatment is something which all doctors should be prepared to handle, but it can be difficult to know how to approach it. The film presents how to prepare for such an interview and then how to conduct it. The film simulates a couple of possible responses from a parent after an anaesthetist puts forward their concerns. It is very important to recognise at the outset that the reactions of the parent and child actors in this recording have been compartmentalised. They are unlikely to occur in the same order and may be very different in reality. The film also suggests how best to communicate with other professionals about your findings, and discusses what the next stages of the process might entail. © Royal College of Anaesthetists and Association of Paediatric Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland
