Tire Chain Bridge This video provides an example of how you might go about building this playground element. For full instructions click on the link below to find the downloadable, pictorial step by step plans on Playground Ideas' website. Design Description: This is a ground level playground element that allows children to climb up and across a bridge made of tires. Building Steps: 1. Drill two holes on opposite sides of three separate tires through the sidewalls. Next, align the holes of each tires. Then, bolt tires together with hex bolts, nuts, and washers. 2. Dig holes and bury bolted tires 30 cm / 12“ into the ground at 68 cm / 27“ apart. 3. Place two tires side by side with tire treads touching. Next, drill holes where tires meet. Then, bolt tires together with hex bolts, nuts, and washers. There should be two sets. 4. Place the two sets of connected tires over the buried tires so they overlap. 5. Drill holes where the tires are in contact. Then, bolt tires together with hex bolts, nuts, and washers. 6. Place three more tires on top of the structure and align the tires with the buried tires below. 7. Drill holes where tires are in contact. Then, bolt tires together with hex bolts, nuts, and washers. The intended use of the designs available on these plans and the website is to provide ideas for the construction of playground equipment from local and/or recycled materials. They may, or may not, be suitable for your purposes. Further, specialised knowledge may be required to construct safe playground equipment based on these designs—for example, engineering knowledge to allow selection of appropriate strength materials for the purposes to which those materials are put, or playground layout expertise to avoid layouts which might cause risk of injury to users. The use of local and/or recycled materials carries inherent risks. Before using recycled materials in playground construction you should consider the source and properties of the materials (strength, contaminants, splintering risk, etc) and whether they are fit for use in a playground. Improper construction and use of playground equipment may cause death or injury. Please refer to the Playground Ideas Playground Safety Handbook here: https://playgroundideas.org/handbooks/.
