A panel of distinguished experts and guests from Africa and the diaspora participated in a round table presentation and discussion on “Colonising Africa: what happened to Matriachal African societies after the Berlin conference”. The event explored a variety of topics, including how Queen Mothers ruled alongside kings in precolonial Africa, patriarchy in the postcolony, cultural genocide in Southern Africa, The pan-African Cape slave identity in contemporary spaces worldwide, strategies to decolonise the continent while preserving its indigenous essence and how technological innovation enhances the preservation of intangible cultural heritage. The concept of ROOTS, CULTURE, HERITAGE and DECOLONISATION week is underpinned by the historical entanglement of the Battle of Adwa 1896, the Battle of Salt River 1510 and the Berlin (Congo) conference 1885. The 5 days between 26 February and 2 March is a spatio-temporal moment to reflect on the legacies and implications of the historic events: 141th commemoration of the Berlin conference, 516th anniversary of the Battle of Salt River and 130th anniversary of the Battle of Adwa. The Berlin conferences concluded on 26 February 1885 and the Battles of Adwa and Salt River are 386 years apart but both took place on 1 March. RCHD week is site and substance of knowledge production. It represents a critical juncture of our-[his]tory as Africans in local and global spaces. Lets use this opportunity annually to memorialise decolonial perspectives of the past while raising awareness to shape a united and enlightened African future.
