Holding START and A, B, or C while selecting the character will turn his sword red, boost his power, and give him an Absolute Defense shield (like Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter bosses), shown as a thin red bar in his Dragon Power meter. Enemies have to deplete that meter through combos before they can actually damage his health. Holding Start and X will give him a single afterimage that causes an extra hit when he attacks, in addition to the Absolute Defense shield. Holding Start and Y will give him a black palette, with two afterimages that hit enemies, infinite Super and Dragon meters, and an energy barrier like the final boss of Dragon Quarter. The energy barrier has 1000 HP, which needs to be entirely depleted before opponents can start to damage their Absolute Defense. Until then, the character won't flinch when hit. Holding Start and Z when selecting the character will give him a gold palette (like his Infini form in BoF4's bad ending), all the advantages of his black palette, but with a third afterimage, even more dramatically increased power, and the energy barrier now has 60,000 HP.
