What happens inside your brain when you experience art? Music of the Mind is a groundbreaking project by cognitive neuroscientist Kim Awa of Art Bridges Foundation that transforms brainwaves into sound. Using EEG technology inside James Turrell’s Skyspace at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Kim recorded people’s neural electrical activity as they experienced shifting light, color, and atmosphere. Each brain’s unique rhythms—linked to different states, such as focus, calm, emotion, and curiosity—were translated into musical compositions in collaboration with musician Chaz Knapp. The result is an immersive soundscape that reveals how art moves us on both a scientific and deeply human level. This project invites us to listen differently, see how shared experiences don’t always mean shared meaning, and appreciate the beauty of individuality in how each of us perceives the world.
