I’ve been sitting with a question I don’t hear asked often enough in genealogy spaces: What is the responsibility of a family historian? After watching ethical discussions in the genealogy community and visiting museums, memorials, and former prison sites where history is anything but abstract, I came home unsettled. I’ve taught people how to research. I’ve encouraged digging deeper. I’ve championed telling the full story. But this time, I found myself wondering whether “doing more genealogy” is always the right answer—and whether “do no harm” should mean more than a passing phrase. This isn’t a how-to video. It’s a reflection. If you’ve ever wrestled with telling painful stories, preserving difficult truths, or balancing truth with care for the living, this conversation is for you. I’d love to hear how you define responsibility in family history.
