Tahni is a multiracial human teenager with light brown skin, dark hazel eyes, and brownish-black curls in a bob above her shoulders. Storybook-style text explains that many members of our system can communicate with each other fairly easily these days, but that wasn't always the case. In our earliest years, complex trauma prevented the integration of various states of self, unable to clearly communicate with each other. Six children are depicted on a black floor in a dark open space with some fog on the horizon. Each one is colored differently, and is unable to see the others, except for one pair who can interact with each other but not the rest. Text explains that as we aged, some of us could overhear each other's mental commentary, but most of it was negative. Renata is shown sitting in a classroom, trying to read a textbook, while Maud, Deyva, and Rusty's voices echo around her. Eventually, she tried searching Google for answers, but found nothing helpful - so, she got creative instead. Renata tried to imbue plush toys with those disembodied voices plaguing her, and then tried to symbolically "kill" them. She places a light brown plush rabbit with a pink shirt, a monkey plushie with long limbs, and an old Blossom doll (from The Powerpuff Girls) on our bedroom floor. Images flash by of the rabbit "hanging" from the edge of our window, using an old lanyard with a nametag bearing the body's legal name (both of which Renata declared "dead"). Meanwhile, Renata is shown stabbing a bunch of sewing pins into the monkey plushie, while the Blossom doll lies on the floor. It didn't work, of course. But now, Renata could fight back against more readily identifiable targets. She sits curled up against a wall of our bedroom, as Maud's voice mocks, "Nice try. Ready to end it yet?" Renata looks up at the hanging rabbit plushie and says, "Shut up." While most of that early communication was arguing, any direct communication between us strengthened our awareness of each other. Renata sits in a classroom again, this time drawing stylized versions of the voice-imbued plushies. Deyva is a ragged-looking Blossom doll with an undead green tint, hovering warily in the air. Rusty is a tan monkey plushie with white fur on his chest, red eyes, a pointed tooth, and silver pins sticking out of him. Maud is a light-brown rabbit plushie with a pink cheerleader dress and a sinister grin full of pointed teeth. She's drawn wearing a broken noose like a scarf, blatantly mocking Renata's attempt to kill her. Renata eventually opted out of the body's life, to avoid both the long-dreaded 13th birthday and the onset of puberty. She walks away from Maud, Deyva, and Rusty with both hands thrown up, yelling "NOPE." She wears a black trenchcoat and a black backwards baseball cap, with her brownish-black hair in a long poofy ponytail. The other three observe her walking across the dark floor in the otherwise nondescript space, into the darkness and away from the light source to the left. Then they turn to the left, seeing another light-skinned multiracial kid walking further that way toward the light. AJ is depicted wearing a black top hat with red-lensed black goggles, and a black straitjacket with small locks down the front. She doesn't look up from drawing something on a clipboard. Maud, Deyva, and Rusty follow her toward the light instead, while Renata "NOPE nope nope"s her way further into the darkness. Writing things down became especially important, to maintain our overall functioning. Scenes are shown from 2003, 2005, and 2009, depicting the evolution of writing down our communication using laptops, clipboards, and eventually a notes app on our phone. As years passed, our co-consciousness continued to improve. CJ is shown sitting on a dark floor in an empty space, using a laptop to make a chart of known system members. Even so, direct communication was just the start - effective communication is still a work in progress. Tahni is depicted in 2017, making a wtf face and gesture at her phone.
