Those familiar with the channel will know that lately we’ve been getting our hands on the most popular keyboards on Amazon and doing reviews to see if the popularity is justified. We’ve gone another one for you today. In this video, we’re going to be looking at the RockJam RJ561, one of the top sellers on Amazon. If this one has caught your eye and you’d like an expert to weigh in on whether it’s a good buy or not, this video is for you. If this is your first time on the channel, please like, subscribe, and hit the notification bell! Unboxing The first thing you see when opening the box is a set of headphones and a user manual. Next, there’s a box with a bench, a box with a keyboard stand, and finally, the instrument itself. Right away it’s clear that the fit and finish of this keyboard is a step above some of the other popular keyboards from Amazon that we’ve seen. First Impressions Compared to other instruments under the $200 CAD mark, this one has some cool stuff going on. It’s not a perfect machine, but given the price, as a way to expose a new learner to piano for the first time and gauge interest, the RJ561 is just fine. Manual Not Necessary Fortunately, the RJ561 is very easy to use so you won’t find yourself constantly having to refer to the manual. When you do open the manual, it’s very well written and super clear, which is not the case with the majority of inexpensive keyboards, which have manuals that are poorly put together. Clear Layout The layout is very clear and well labeled. The user interface is easy to navigate, so getting around this thing is a breeze. Limited Polyphony One drawback of the RJ561 is its very limited polyphony, as well as a delay from the sound engine whenever multiple notes are played at once. These drawbacks make the RJ561 unfit for professional applications, but not at all a deal-breaker for beginners. Hit and Miss Tones There are 199 sounds so that’s a huge plus. The sound quality itself is hit and miss - some tones sound pretty authentic, while others are way off, but given the large selection of tones, this also shouldn’t be a deal-breaker for beginners. Built-In Rhythms There are some built-in rhythms which is a nice, fun feature that beginners will probably enjoy. The auto-accompaniment aspect is less well executed. Teaching Systems There’s a built-in teaching system with 50 songs which is neat in theory, but probably won’t be particularly useful for new learners. Overall Thoughts The RJ561 is far more usable than what we’ve seen from other instruments around the same price point, in fact, this is probably the best we’ve seen so far for under $200 CAD.
