Mernda Rail Extension; The First Trains - Metro Trains Melbourne

On Sunday 26th August 2018 Melbourne's newest railway line opened with the Mernda rail extension taking its first passengers. The 8km extension of the (now former) South Morang line features three new stations at Middle Gorge, Hawkstowe and Mernda, and was built at a cost of around $600 million. In this video we see the first timetabled trains to use the new railway line. We start the video at Mernda station where we see the first down train to use the new line; the 2:51am Mernda service. Shortly after another X'trapolis arrives into the other platform to form the first up train; the 3:49am Flinders Street service. We then see the train leave Mernda station. We then spend the rest of the morning filming various X'trapolis trains at Mernda, Hawkstowe and Middle Gorge stations.
