Traditional air traffic control towers might soon be replaced by so-called “Remote Tower Centres” with the aim of controlling multiple airports from a remote location – centralising air traffic services for different airports, combining resources, and offering air traffic services more efficiently. In November 2021, DLR and Frequentis created a Remote Tower Centre prototype platform with 15 simulated airports to be controlled remotely by Lithuanian and Polish air traffic controllers from Oro Navigacija and PANSA. During these trials, newly developed planning tools for large remote tower centres were successfully tested. These will play a vital role for controllers and supervisors in the new work environments to cope with the increasing complexity of an optimal resource allocation. The developments and exercises are part of the SESAR JU project “Digital Technologies for Tower” (PJ05-W2 DTT).
