At the request of M.E Rubik Sonata 49 in C Sharp Minor Hob XVI/36 by Joseph Haydn Moderato 0:00 difficulty 6.5/10 Scherzando 10:41 difficulty 6/10 Menuetto 14:15 difficulty 6/10 This sonata, although published in 1780 as part of Haydn's Op. 30, may have been written up to a decade earlier. An often serious work in a minor key, it seems to reflect the Sturm und Drang style that was in vogue around 1770. It may have been among the first works Haydn wrote specifically for the piano, then in the early years of its existence independently of the harpsichord and clavichord. The belligerent opening receives a placatory reply. The themes converse, retain their identity and play off each other. A new voice emerges from the interplay. Despite this interlude the mood of antagonism sweeps the movement along to a surprising, lovely conclusion. The second movement is not good company for the movement that preceded it. It has an adroit trio but the movement as a whole comes off as a little too long. The last movement is meditative and solemn. Carefully positioned bass notes gently urge the decorative theme along. The middle section is more resistant but gives in to its firm bass accompaniment. The music sinks into a graceful languor of soft resignation. Description by Bob Williams
