Alfonso Caurón's "Children of Men" has a density to it that I've never seen matched. Every single frame has some sort of subtext or subtle world building that goes miles to immerse you in the world. Factor that in with the long takes, and you have a film that will practically leave you shell shocked. However, what I'm more interested in with this video is the sound design. Sure, like most great films, you can watch Children of Men without audio and still get the basic premise and themes, but the same can be said for it's bare audio track, with no accompanying images. There are a boatload of subtle tricks that this films audio uses to immerse you in the world, and I'll be focusing on some of them today. The single song used in this video is Fragments of a Prayer by John Ravener from the Children of Men score, as well as the first couple seconds of Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima by Krzysztof Penderecki in the outro; also from the films score.
