Blind Blake, who recorded between 1926 and 1932, represents the pinnacle of ragtime guitar of that era, with unrivaled rhythmic sophistication and precise execution despite the sometimes breathtaking speed. Even on the slow blues he performed, the characteristic 'bounce' of his 'sportin right hand' as Rev Gary Davis called it is evident as well his seemingly boundless imagination. He is best know for the fast rags in C, but occasionally his recordings hint at much more. In the same way that contemporary anecdotes about Robert Johnson reveal that his musical palette extended way beyond the blues that we know from his legendary recording, Blake's collaborations and recordings reveal an astonishingly versatile musician, some of which are 'way out there' as Ry Cooder put it. Police Dog Blues is a rare foray, according to the recordings it sits among, into Open D but clearly he is at home in that tuning, and all his characteristic bounce and inventiveness is there. We forget that we only hear what the label owners asked for, or what the artistes thought they wanted. not necessarily what they played most often. I have played this lots over the years but was reminded of it whilst recording a video and on a whim knocked this up.. it was great to be playing it again, even though I hadn't played it for a number of years the muscle memory didn't let me down! #fingerstyle #prewarblues #fingerpicking #acousticblues
